The semi-final competition began tonight on America’s Got Talent as twelve contestants performed for three spots that will be announced tomorrow night. All contestants performed flawlessly with no buzzes from the Judges and no obvious nerves from any of the contestants.
Each act needed to perform above and beyond anything that they’ve ever done before on America’s Got Talent. Here’s how the acts fared in order of performance.
Andrew De Leon
Winning one of the Wild Card spots, Andrew De Leon was the first contestant in this semi-final show. Having no classical training for his voice, he sang “Ave Maria”. His soprano voice was loud and clear and he hit the challenging high notes. The audience was on their feet when he finished. Judge Sharon Osbourne suggested that Andrew “take off” his gothic look and viewers might take him more seriously as an opera singer. Although Andrew hit all the notes, both Howard Stern and Howie Mandel felt that some formal training might help him now.
Todd Oliver and Irving
Another Wild Card act that made it to the semi-finals, Todd Oliver simulated a late night talk show with Irving, the talking dog as a guest. The jokes were timed right and very funny. The audience found the act hilarious as Oliver used current event jokes and was on top of his act. Howard Stern strongly felt that this act should go through.
Donovan & Rebecca
A husband and wife team that uses strength, agility, and grace in their act, the couple began with Donovan balancing Rebecca on his shoulder. The couple used a trapeze for part of their act and again, Rebecca lifted and balanced her husband for several seconds. Howard Stern was in awe of Rebecca lifting and balancing her husband while wearing high-heel shoes. Stern felt it was remarkable and they should be one of the three performances to continue on America’s Got Talent. Both Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel agreed that Donovan & Rebecca should be in the finals.
Already receiving marriage proposals online from girls, this 14-year old from Chicago wooed the audience with a popular tune by One Direction. Edon played the piano and worked the audience. After his performance, the audience was on their feet chanting his name. Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne felt Edon made the right song choice and performed well. Howie stated that he felt Edon was the best singer in the competition. Howard Stern was booed by the audience when he said he felt a little bored by the performance.
The Scott Brothers
This two-man dance act is so in sync with their moves, that it’s awesome to watch. Making all the same moves together, the audience thought they were great but the Judges did not. Howard Stern feels they’re the best dance act in the competition, however, they did not step it up tonight. Both Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel agreed.
He’s a mind reader that lives at home with no pets or girlfriend. He asked Howard Stern to color a picture of himself with different colored markers. Dittelman had already done this and had his picture on stage covered up. When Stern brought his picture next to Dittelman’s, Dittelman removed the cloth covering his picture to show that Howard Stern used the same colors that he had used. It was mind boggling. Dittelman also involved viewers by asking them to pick two different shapes, one inside of another, and then he showed a triangle inside of a circle that he felt most people had chosen. All three Judges feel that this is an act that should continue and Howie Mandel said that Dittelman is the act that he gets the most questions on.
There’s probably no contestant that wants to win this year’s America’s Got Talent competition more than Turf. He’s a dancer, a contortionist, and a likable guy. Wearing no shirt and glittering white pants and sneakers, Turf performed his backflips and indescribable moves flawlessly. The audience clapped in time to the music and Judges Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne would like to see him move ahead in the competition. Howard Stern stated that he really likes Turf and his tough act, but wonders that viewers might think he performs too much of the same thing.
Bria Kelly is a 16-year old country singer who’s had problems with her nerves in the past. She sang well tonight and hit all the notes in her song. Sharon Osbourne liked the song choice but felt it needed more emotion. Howie Mandel felt she didn’t stand out with tonight’s performance. Howard Stern felt she did stand out but needs improvement in her stage presence.
A grandfather who paints pictures and stories with sand, Joe Castillo taps into our imagination with his creativity. Using only his hands, he creates image after image. His first image was a white dove, then two hands holding one another into the face of a child, and he ended with Jesus holding that child. Howard Stern loves Castillo’s work but feels it’s the same thing over and over again. Judges Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel disagreed with Stern and felt that Joe Castillo has an original way of telling stories through his sand art.
The Judges had high praise for William Close and his performance tonight. Close became a father during the competition and plays to win for his newborn son. Tonight he added singers to his earth harp and other musical instruments that he created. All three Judges feel William Close is the front runner in this competition and were awed by his performance tonight. All agreed that his act is unique and the production of this performances are outstanding.
With very funny material, Tom Cotter came on stage and asked Howie Mandel to choose a topic that was displayed on the screen. College was the topic and Cotter had several jokes that kept the audience roaring with laughter. All three Judges loved his material and hope to see him again in the finals.
Academy of Villains
A dance crew from San Francisco that has wowed the audience in the past, their performance tonight was questionable. Dressed in black and red with white gloves and painted white faces, the thirty dancers performed flawlessly. Judges Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne felt their performance was unique and entertaining. Howie said that Academy of Villains is the best dance group he has seen on America’s Got Talent in any season. Howard Stern had other thoughts. He said he was bored and felt the dance group didn’t add anything new to their performance.
The results will be tomorrow night, Wednesday, August 29th at 9PM EST on local NBC stations.
